The Prime Minister has insisted his government has no plans to build a new airport anywhere in Kent.

Mr Cameron was tackled over the issue at Prime Minister's Questions by Gillingham MP Reh Chishti.

It follows reports that the Mayor of London Boris Johnson is to reconsider the case for an airport in north Kent on the Hoo Peninsula.

The Mayor is also considering options for an off-shore airport in the Thames Estuary off the north Kent coast.

Mr Chishti pressed the PM to confirm the government had no plans to build an airport anywhere in Kent.

Replying, Mr Cameron said: "The Department of Transport has no plans for an airport in the Thames Estuary or in any other part of Medway."

The news that the Cliffe airport plan was back on the agenda has already been condemned by Medway council chiefs.

From 2001 to 2004, Cliffe, which is on the Peninsula, was fourth on the government's list of sites for a new airport, but after fierce opposition the area was ruled out.
