CH INSP PETER WEDLAKE: "Our campaign never ends..."

KENT police officers in Medway conducted a total of 260 breath tests and arrested 70 people for drink driving in December, it has been revealed.

The ages of those arrested in the course of a month-long campaign ranged from 16 to 60. Sixty-three of them are from the Medway area.

So far, nine people have been disqualified from driving and a further 41 are waiting to be dealt with by the courts.

In the fourth and final week of the December campaign, December 21 to 29, police arrested 21 people, 19 men and two women, for drink driving.

Ch Insp Peter Wedlake, deputy area commander in Medway, said: “It is depressing that so many people of all ages and backgrounds still refuse to heed the warnings.

"Kent Police is committed to reducing the death toll and serious injuries caused by drink driving. Our campaign never ends.

"The good work continues throughout 2006 with initiatives aimed at improving road safety. We will be on the look out for selfish people who put lives at risk by drinking and driving."
