An ice hockey match between the Invicta Dynamos and the Cardiff Devils had to be abandoned after fights between fans and players.

The Gillingham-based club were playing at their Medway home at the Silver Blades Ice Rink in Gillingham Business Park when the match was halted following a number of clashes.

The match was stopped in the 35th minute with the Devils apparently unwilling to complete the fixture.

A statement issued on the Dynamos' website expressed regret over the incident and said it was liaising with the English Ice Hockey Associaton (EIHA), over the matter, but added it is committed to making matches at the Gillingham site family-friendly affairs.

The statement said: “The club must now await the decision of the EIHA with regards to the outcome of the fixture.

“It is unacceptable for players or staff to react to any provocation, especially in a dangerous manner that involves the use of their hockey stick.”

Medway police said officers had not been called to the ice rink and they were not investigating the clashes.

The Cardiff Devils say the team will also be fully cooperating with the EIHA to investigate the incidents and have also issued a statement on its website.

Devils veteran defenceman Jason Stone said: “In all my time and over 1,000 games of hockey I never thought I would be shocked at what I saw; I am truly shocked.”
