THE Shell of a 1918 Army hut has undergone a £200,000 renovation to become an up to date village hall for both Charing Heath and Lenham Heath. Sir John Grugeon, a one-time leader of Kent County Council who formerly lived in the area, cut the ribbon to declare it officially open.

At one stage, the old memorial hall was reduced to a roof and scaffold pillars, with the front door padlocked to a post, but it is now complete for community use, with access for disabled people, and a new kitchen and storage areas.

Trustee John Finn-Kelcey masterminded the grant aid, design and planning, with assistance from Ashford council. Locally raised funds and finance from landfill tax credits via Bretts Quarries and the single regeneration budget for west Ashford, plus support from the Charing and Lenham parish councils, ensured its completion.

Special guests included Greta Waghorn, 98, and a member of the Kettle family from Pluckley, who brought a receipt for the hire of the hall in 1924, at a cost of seven shillings and sixpence.

An exhibition of photographs and memorabilia sparked anecdotes about pre-war amateur dramatic productions and events, over a celebration buffet supper.
