Residents are being warned of "severe weather" as thunderstorms are set to batter Kent.

The Met Office has issued an amber alert that heavy rain could cause power cuts, road closures due to difficult driving conditions, and disruption to public transport.

Homes and businesses may also be under threat from damage caused by flooding.

The alert is in place from 4pm to 9pm.

It comes after an earlier yellow weather warning was issued for heavy rain from 12pm to midnight.

The Met Office says: "There is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, which could potentially disrupt your plans.

"This means there is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts and the potential risk to life and property.

"You should think about changing your plans and taking action to protect yourself and your property.

"You may want to consider the impact of the weather on your family and your community and whether there is anything you need to do ahead of the severe weather to minimise the impact."

Kent County Council says it has been told up to 60mm of rain could fall in some places.

Officials say they will continue to monitor the situation and additional resources will be called upon as required.
