Plans to move rock sculptures by renowned artist Antony Gormley from Ashford to Maidstone have sparked an outcry.

Designed by the artist who created the Angel of the North, the two 'boulders' were Mr Gormley's first professional commission and have been undergoing restoration work for a year.

Restoration work on the sculptures is now nearing completion and a number of prominent possible locations around Ashford had been suggested.

But it is understood that officers representing Ashford Borough Council have been unable to persuade Kent County Council, which owns the sculptures, to agree upon a suitable new home in the town.

A spokesman for Ashford council said: "We are obviously disappointed that these sculptures will not be staying in Ashford. ABC has been in discussions with KCC and put forward several suggestions for alternative high-profile sites in the town centre.

"However, we understand that the boulders are now likely to be displayed in Maidstone town centre."
