The number of British soldiers killed on active duty in Afghanistan since 2001 passed the 100 milestone this week.

It has led to fresh questions about the involvement of UK troops in the conflict which has claimed the lives of five servicemen from Kent.

Kent's fallen heroes, include:

Lance Corporal Jake Alderton of 36 Engineer Regiment, 20 Field Squadron.

Accident: Road traffic

His vehicle left the road while crossing a bridge in in Helmand Province. L/Cpl Alderton was pronounced dead at the scene, two others were injured.

Date: 09/11/07.

Ivano Violino of 36 Engineer Regiment,20 Field Squadron.

Hostile: Explosion

Died in explosion while commanding a vehicle in convoy.

Date: 17/09/07.

Major Alexis Roberts of 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles.

Hostile: Explosion

Returning to base after an operation when killed by improvised explosive device.

Date: 04/10/07.

Sergeant Dave Wilkinson from 19 Regiment Royal Artillery attached to Grenadier Guards, 1st Battalion

Hostile: Bomb

Vehicle hit by explosion after patrol also attacked with small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades in Helmund.

Date: 01/07/07.

Flight Sergeant Gary Wayne Andrews, Weapons System Operator was one of the 14 personnel who was killed following the crash of a RAF Nimrod MR2 aircraft in Afghanistan.

Date: 02/09/06

Private Craig O'Donnell of of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland in Kabul.

Hostile: Suicide bombing

The 24-year-old was killed in a suicide bomb attack in Kabul.
