Kent rail commuters now have a chance to travel in a Javelin high-speed train celebrating Britain’s finest female rower.

Southeastern has named the train after the four-time Olympic medallist Katherine Grainger.

Dr Grainger unveiled her train during a visit to St Pancras International Station.

She said: “It’s crazy! I love it! It’s all so surreal. I can’t wait to take my mum for a trip on my train.

“Thank you to Southeastern, this is a huge honour.”

Southeastern’s engineering director Wayne Jenner said: “Southeastern’s high speed service played an important part in the success of the London 2012 Games and to honour this we’ve named the fleet of trains after some of Britain’s greatest-ever Olympians.

"We took the train naming to an employee vote and Katherine was a clear choice.

“Her accomplishments – representing Great Britain in four consecutive Olympic Games and countless World Championships are nothing short of inspirational.

"We’re only too pleased to permanently honour her on the side of a Javelin train.”

Passengers boarding the Katherine Grainger train would be reminded of the spirit and energy of London 2012, he added.
