THE cattlemen and women that provide the backbone of the traditional agricultural shows sprang a special surprise on the man they consider has been their champion for the past decade.

When John Jennings stood down as show chairman last summer after 10 years in office, regular exhibitor Jim Warnock from Folkestone took the hat round the cattle lines and there was a big collection by those that wanted him to know they appreciated his efforts.

On Saturday, in the agricultural ring packed with cattle for the major presentations, proceedings were halted for the special hand over of a beautifully sculptured and inscribed model of his favourite cow from his own show herd. It had been hand made by Fiona Boty of Ruckinge.

Mr Warnock said: "Mr Jennings has been the finest chairman a county show could ever have. We have not always agreed but at the end of the day he always did his best for show people.

"He is the man responsible for us getting £50 for each animal we bring to show."

A clearly pleased and surprised Mr Jennings took up his familiar place on the microphone and said: "This is wonderful. This is Phyllis the cow that provided us with a lot of fun and many prizes."

Turning to the stockmen and women he said: "You are the county show and if you are not here we might as well close the gates."
