Baljinder Singh Kooner (also known as Jindi) pleaded not guilty to murder and stood trial at the Old Bailey where a jury has returned today with a unanimous guilty verdict.

A second man has been jailed today for the riverside murder of a step dad more than seven years ago.

Kamaljit Kalon, also known as Bobby, was stabbed to death on Gordon Promenade in Gravesend in July 2003.

Officers investigating the killing found CCTV footage of a fight between three men breaking out just after 8pm.

An ambulance was called and Mr Kalon was taken to Darent Valley Hospital but died later that evening.

Two suspects - Baljinder Singh Kooner and Guljinder Singh Gurewel - were quickly identified.

But when police tried to arrest them the pair had skipped the country to head towards Italy.

Four years later Gurewel, 33, was arrested as he attempted to smuggle himself back into the UK at the Thames Europort in Dartford.

He was charged with murder and in 2008 handed life behind bars.

Shortly after Gurewel's sentencing, the courts issued a warrant for the arrest of the fugitive Kooner.

He was later arrested by French police in September 2009 and extradited in October before being charged with murder.

Kooner stood trial at the Old Bailey and denied murder.

Today, a jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict. The killer was then handed 12 years behind bars.

The victim's death left behind his widow Ravinder, to whom he had been married for two years and her three children by a previous marriage.

Detective Inspector Ian Rogerson, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "Our thoughts remain with Ravinder and her family and we hope that today's verdict brings some closure to the terrible events in 2003.

"Kent Police has remained dedicated to bringing both offenders for this terrible crime before the courts and we are pleased that the jury has returned a guilty verdict."

Officers had established that Mr Kalon left his home in Sidcup on July 10, 2003, and went to meet some men he knew.

Witness statements read in court stated two bare-chested, blood-stained men had been seen to flee the area shortly after the fight.

Attempting to conceal their faces with their clothes, they entered a property in Edwin Street.

The blood stained clothes were never found, however DNA from blood found in the bathroom of the property was that of Bobby.

DI Rogerson added: "Both offenders believed they could evade police for the brutal attack on Kamaljit Kalon which led to his death.

"Clearly they underestimated the commitment of Kent Police officers to ensure those who bring fear and criminality to our communities are arrested, charged and face justice before the courts."

During the trial the court heard witnesses describe Kooner as the man who held Bobby down whilst a second man stabbed him.

DNA taken from the bite marks in Bobby's arm was also found to be Kooner's.

The court heard the fight had sparked over a friendship between Mr Kalon and a woman he knew.
