Motorists heading out of Kent have been facing severe delays of nearly three hours after a huge stretch of the M25 was shut following a fatal crash.

Traffic has been queuing for 12 miles from J6 at Godstone in Surrey (library image right) after a pedestrian was hit by a lorry and killed on the hard shoulder.

It is thought a man in his 50s had got out of a Ford Focus before he and the car were hit at around 4.45am today.

Congestion was stretching as far as a mile before J5 for the A21 and Sevenoaks, and it has been taking around two hours and 45 minutes to get through the jam.

The accident led to the M26 westbound being closed, with queueing traffic between J2A A20 and M25 J5 for the A21. It has since been reopened.

The M25 was shut clockwise between J6 at Godstone and J7 at Redhill, which is the turn off for the M23.

Traffic was queuing for 12 miles, with congestion back to J4.
