Maidstone crown court

A convicted sex offender from Lithuania who subjected a woman to a degrading attack has been jailed for more than five years.

Rolandas Sabalionis, who described himself as behaving 'like an animal', was told by a judge at Maidstone Crown Court he was a danger.

The 31-year-old, of Upper Fant Road, Maidstone, came to the UK with his family in 2010.

The court heard that in 2004 he had been jailed in his home country for five years after raping a 15-year-old girl.

The charge and sentence were later reduced to indecent assault and three-and-a-half years respectively.

Now he has been sentenced to five years and three months behind bars, with an extended licence period of three years after he admitted two offences of assault by penetration and two of assault causing actual bodily harm in May last year.

" you regarded yourself as someone who could have whatever kind of sexual activity you wished and when you wished…” – judge jeremy carey

He will serve half the jail term, less 182 days already spent on remand, but upon release will remain on licence and subject to recall until 2020.

Explaining the reason for imposing an extended sentence, Judge Jeremy Carey said: "I come to the following conclusion that both by the reason of a culture which you have grown up in and by reason of your particular attitude towards females you regarded yourself as someone who could have whatever kind of sexual activity you wished and when you wished."

Nina Ellin, prosecuting, said Sabalionis used a shampoo bottle and an air freshener canister during the sex attack on the woman.

She was also beaten, suffering cuts to her face and multiple bruising to her arms, legs and body.

At one point, Sabalionis grabbed a knife and held it to her neck, threatening to slash her throat.

The woman eventually managed to escape and alerted police.

He denied three offences of rape and one of making threats to kill. The court ordered that they be left on file.
