Soldier killed in action is named

Major Alexis Roberst was by an improvised explosive device

A KENT-based soldier serving with The Royal Gurkha Rifles at Shorncliffe, near Folkestone, has been named as the latest victim of the conflict in Southern Afghanistan.

Major Alexis Roberts, 32, was killed by an improvised explosive device on Thursday after commanding a convoy of vehicles during operations that were returning to base near Kandahar.

He leaves a widow and two daughters.

Commanding Officer Lieut Col Jonny Bourne, said: "The British Army has lost one of its finest prospects and the nation a dedicated servant, a warm-hearted man of profound integrity and courage.

"Quite simply he was a very special human being."
