A 29-year-old man has died following an accident at Buckmore Park karting track in Chatham.

The victim has been named as Adam Goatley who lived in Canterbury Road at Sidcup.

He was seriously injured when two karts collided during an owner-drivers race organised by Club 100. He was taken to the Medway Maritime Hospital at Gillingham where he later died.

The race, last Sunday, involved just a few friendly laps between amateur drivers. The tragedy was witnessed by a number of spectators.

One eyewitness said: “We were standing behind the barrier and as the karts went around the corner there was this almighty crash.

"When we looked around the corner the man was out of his kart and lying on the ground."

Police officers from West Kent are still investigating the tragedy. The inquest into Mr Goatley's death has been opened and adjourned.

A spokesman for Buckmore Park Karting Track, said: “The circuit was hired exclusively to Club 100 who promoted their own event with their own drivers. That was our sole input to the day.

“I can confirm that none of our own karts were involved in the day. We cannot comment further until police have finished their inquiries. All we can do is offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the driver involved.”

John Vigor, managing director of race promoter Club 100 also spoke of the distress felt at the incident and passed on sympathies to friends and relatives.
