Danny Kedwell completed the transition from top fan to top dog with a double for Gillingham on Saturday.
His two goals, together with a belter from Luke Rooney, helped the Gills to a 3-0 win over Plymouth and maintained their unbeaten start in League 2.
It is Gillingham’s best start to a season for 16 years and nobody was as thrilled as striker Kedwell, who got his first goals for his hometown club, after converting two penalties.
"I am glad the first penalty went in and it was a big pressure off my back," he said. "Now I just have to push on and score as many goals as I can.
"The manager has always said to me, ‘keep working hard, the goal will come’, and he was right.
"It was amazing to score and something I have been waiting all my life to do.
"As a Gillingham fan I was glad they were at the Rainham End as well, where I used to stand myself. The same buzz which the fans got, I got.
"I didn’t know what to do when I scored, whether to jump in with the crowd and join them, but I thought better of it. It is a relief and I feel great."
