The musical tastes of Margate will be revealed by the Charity Shop DJ on this weekend (17/18) during a residency with Turner Contemporary.

On Saturday at 10.30am, DJ Andy Jupp will be setting out from Turner Contemporary’s Project Space in the High Street (the former Marks & Spencer building) to tour the town’s charity shops with his mobile turntable and sound system.

In each shop he’ll be asking the public to uncover their forgotten favourites on vinyl which he will then play for them on the spot. People will be photographed with their record of choice and the images will be added to the Charity Shop DJ online gallery which can be seen at www.charityshopdj.com.

The day will culminate at 3pm in Cartons coffee shop, Regal Walk, shopping centre with a DJ-ing session featuring some of his musical finds from the day.

On Sunday, between 2pm-4pm at the Turner Contemporary Project Space people are invited to bring along their favourite records on vinyl. The Charity Shop DJ will play these during the afternoon, along with some of his best finds from Saturday, and dancing “will be positively encouraged.”

Andy said: “Some people get their exercise going to the gym, walking or running but personally, I don’t think there’s a better way to exercise than dancing to some great music.

"It’s all about celebration really and people’s record collections of today are the charity shop records of tomorrow.

"I hope that over the weekend we’ll be able to create a musical portrait of Margate’s past and present.”
