Tom Wynter has spent the last two months watching Gillingham battle for League 1 survival from the sidelines but now he could be playing a pivotal role.

Wynter was thrust back into action on Tuesday to replace Darren Dennehy and help rescue a point for the Gills.

He is now the club’s only recognised fit and available centre-back but the prospect of facing Leeds on Saturday isn’t going to phase the youngster.

"I know it's Leeds but I just think of it as another game," said the 19-year-old. "I’ll just get my head down, work hard and do the best I can.

"I know it’s a big game but that doesn’t play on my mind at all. It’s just another game of football.

"I try not to focus on the occasion – I try to focus on myself and do well."

Wynter’s last appearance before Tuesday was in February’s 4-0 defeat at Brentford. Before that he had a loan spell at Dover which included trips to Dorchester and Weston.

He could be ending the season with games against Leeds, Southampton and Norwich.

"I won’t worry about who I’m playing against, I just play my game and try and dominate," he said.

"Obviously you think about who you are playing and what they are going to do but mainly I focus on me, because if I’m having a good game, it stops them having a good game.

"The gaffer knows that if he needs me, I’m there."
