Torrential rain has hit parts of Kent after weather forecasters upgraded their warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

People were told they could face flooding, damage to buildings and potential power cuts as downpours hit the county.

Earlier this morning, a yellow weather warning was released for the county, as well as much of the South East and East of England.

However, now a more severe amber weather warning covers Kent and London.

This means homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

Public transport users may experience delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

There may be difficult driving conditions and some road closures due to surface flooding.

The Met Office say power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses are likely.

Highways teams from Kent and Medway Councils have urged drivers to be careful on the roads.

Kent County Council said: "This rain will continue throughout today although some places may see some drier conditions at times during the afternoon.

"The main concern for today is an area where we expect to see heavy showers, potentially with thunderstorms, to develop this afternoon and this evening.

"The area includes Kent, Surrey, northern areas of Sussex, south-eastern areas of the Thames Valley and the far northeast of Hampshire.

"Not everywhere in this area will see the highest totals but where the showers and thunderstorms do develop we could see as much as 50-60 mm in the space of four to six hours."

Medway Council has retweeted a post from the Met Office to warn drivers in the Towns.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
