Queenborough Town Council is due to meet Sheppey MP Derek Wyatt to express its concerns about the proposed Sheerness Wind Farm.

Mr Wyatt gave his backing to the scheme following a visit to the site at the Docks last month, and this prompted the town council, which has publicly voiced its concern about the wind farm, to request a meeting with him.

Both Mr Wyatt and town councillors were invited by Peel Wind Power to take a closer look at where the four 125m turbines would be built.

Concerns raised by the town council include the health issues of living near to a wind farm and they believe Lappel Bank, the proposed site of the turbines, is part of the land belonging to Queenborough Fishery Trust and is leased to the port authorities for development of “port related activities”.

They wish to meet Mr Wyatt to discuss their concerns and hear his thoughts on the wind farm.

Peel Wind Power is hoping to submit a planning application this summer for four wind turbines to be built on a strip of land along the edge of the docks on the Lappel Bank.

If the application is approved by Swale Council planners, the wind farm will provide enough energy to power 5,500 homes.

Queenborough Town Council clerk, John Clarke, said: “The possibility of health hazards is a concern and we will certainly be looking very carefully at the planning application.

“The council has asked for a trip to a working wind farm which is something Peel is looking in to.”

They will meet with Mr Wyatt at the Guild Hall in Queenborough on July 18.
