Welling's Jamie Day was controversially sent-off for the second time this season on Saturday.

The Wings player/manager (pictured) collected a second yellow card from referee Anthony Coggins despite appearing to win the ball cleanly early in the second half.

It meant Welling had to play the final half-hour with 10 men but ironically they seemed to finish stronger against play-off hopefuls Sutton, who themselves were still smarting from a midweek thrashing by Dartford.

Dean Cracknell had an early effort cleared off the line while Loui Fazackerley shot wide for the hosts.

Sutton, who fielded ex-Wings midfielder Anthony Riviere, enjoyed plenty of possession but failed to create many clear-cut chances.

The visitors improved after the break as Jack Parkinson denied ex-Gills man Leroy Griffiths a clear sight of goal and Tony Taggart forced keeper Craig Holloway into action.

Once down to 10 men, substitute Ben Greenhalgh went close for the Wings but shot straight at keeper Kevin Scriven.

Luis Cumbers then went close for the home side, as did Pires late on, but they could not find a way through despite their numerical disadvantage.

Another ex-Gills forward Stefen Payne was denied by Hollloway as the game, which promised so much but failed to deliver in truth, ended in stalemate.
