Luis Cumbers’ controversial second-half winner moved Welling back to second place in Blue Square South on Saturday.

The Wings dominated for long periods against a dogged Farnborough side but their resistance was finally broken 16 minutes from time.

Substitute Ben Greenhalgh’s cross was kept alive by Lee Clarke, who appeared to foul Miles Smith in the process. But, referee Jake Hillier saw nothing wrong and Clarke crossed for Cumbers (pictured) to have the simplest of finishes from close range.

It was no more than Welling deserved as they upped their work rate in the second half with the returning Loick Pires at the centre of all their good work.

Farnborough keeper Tom Lovelock did well to deny Cumbers and then Louis Fazakerley before two excellent blocks kept out Cumbers and Ben Martin.

Once ahead, Welling could have easily added a second after Farnborough were reduced to 10 men when centre back Douglas Bergqvist picked up a second yellow card for kicking out at Pires with seven minutes remaining.

Cumbers was twice denied and Clarke wasted a glorious opening to claim his second.

Farnborough had their best moments in the opening 11 minutes, but on-loan Charlton keeper Nick Pope tipped over a header from former Gillingham man Adam Bygrave and then Jordan Parkes shot wastefully wide from 20 yards.

Welling will field a weakened team on Tuesday night in the Kent Senior Cup at Dover Athletic before they host third-placed Chelmsford City next Saturday.

Bromley picked up a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Truro City.

Andy Watkins put the Cornishmen ahead on the stroke of half time with a header from Scott Walker's free kick.

Pierre Joseph-Dubois equalised for The Lillywhites on 64 minutes with a sublime solo effort. His run from the halfway line was rounded off with a neat finish past Truro keeper Tom Brooks.
