Two goals in the last eight minutes gave Welling three points their performance hardly warranted in Blue Square Bet South against Staines on Saturday.

Guilty of giving two soft goals away, not to mention countless mistimed passing Welling had to rely on their undoubted character to drag themselves out of a hole.

Welling fell behind as early as the 13th minute. Striker Ross Lafayette amazingly had a penalty appeal turned down as Emmanuel Shosanya climbed all over him before Staines broke from the resulting corner. Keeper Sam Mott raced out to clear but struck the ball against the body of Louie Rae-Beadle, with the ball ending up in the back of the net despite the best efforts of Barney Williams.

Welling's response was immediate, however, Mott's quick throw sent Joe Healy free down the left-wing nad his run took him from penalty area to penalty area before he bundled his way past a challenge and delivered the perfect cross for Lee Clarke (pictured) to convert from close range.

Staines restored their lead with 21 minutes left. Welling gave possession away cheaply in midfield and a precise pass sent Tony Garrod clear and his low shot proved too good for Mott.

Garrod then missed a chance at full stretch and it proved vital as Welling substitutes Jake Gallagher and Jon Main both made an impact.

Day's long free-kick was headed down for former Millwall youngster Gallagher to score from close range on his debut to make it 2-2 with eight minutes left.

Main then fluffed his lines at the far post and Lafayette headed wide from a corner before it was third time lucky in the 90th minute. Lafayette crossed from the left and with Theo Fairweather-Johnson being fouled in the area, the referee played the advantage and Main slotted home his second goal for the club.
