AT least 2,000 villagers could be left unable to watch TV if a 416ft wind turbine is allowed to go up, according to opponents of the scheme.

Protesters claimed the turbine, planned for a picturesque area off Sheephurst Lane, Marden, could affect TV reception to more than 2,400 homes in the area.

John Webley, chairman of the Kent Weald Action Group, said: "One of the issues that arises in respect of wind turbines is the impact they can have on television reception. More than 2,400 homes is a huge number. Wind turbine companies are theoretically obliged to sort out any problems but in a situation like this it would appear that some homes would not have satisfactory alternatives."

The transmitters likely to be affected are at Dover, Heathfield, Crystal Palace and Blue Bell Hill.

Mr Webley said now the 197ft data gathering mast was in place it was easier for people to see the impact the turbine would have on the landscape and "the poor people living nearby".

Despite Hazel Blears, secretary of state for communities and local government, deciding an environmental impact assessment was not needed, both Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells councils have asked for surveys covering issues such as visual impact and wildlife.
