Young prisoner dies after being found hanging in cell at HMP Swaleside

An investigation has been launched into the death of a Kent prisoner found hanging in his cell.

John Baker-Heffernan, 22, was discovered at HMP Swaleside, on Sheppey, at about 8.15am yesterday.

Prison staff tried to resucitate him and paramedics were called, but he was pronounced dead about 25 minutes later.

Baker-Heffernan was serving a five-year sentence for robbery, attempted robbery and burglary.

It is understood he was not the subject of suicide or self-harm prevention measures.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "Staff attempted resuscitation and paramedics attended but he was pronounced dead at 8.40am.

"As with all deaths in custody, the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
