Gillingham transfer target Matt Fish has opted to stay with Dover Athletic after taking advice from Andy Hessenthaler.

The Gills boss spoke with the young full-back, who helped Hessenthaler achieve successive promotions at Dover, but believed Fish would gain more from another full season with the non-league outfit.

Fish, a former Crystal Palace youth player, subsequently agreed a new deal with Whites this week.

Hessenthaler said: "We had a good conversation but Barry Fuller has signed and we also have Jack Payne here. I think Matt is at that age where he needs to play. He needs another year in the Conference South.

"He’s had a year with injuries and he needs a year like he did the year before with 50-odd games and if he does it won’t be just us looking at him, there will be bigger clubs."
