Andy Hessenthaler contemplating bringing reinforcements to Gillingham

Andy Hessenthaler hasn’t ruled out the possibility of bringing in new faces to give his side a lift.

The Gills have lost their last four League 2 matches and the boss Hessenthaler is currently assessing a handful of trialists.

Among the most likely to make a move to Priestfield is West Ham midfielder Oliver Lee.

Hessenthaler is also monitoring former Charlton defender Jonathan Fortune and played both of them in a 5-4 reserve defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday afternoon.

Another player Hessenthaler is keeping tabs on is well-travelled midfielder Rohan Ricketts.

"We need to perhaps freshen it up if we can," said the Gills boss after a 2-1 defeat to Southend.

"Whether that’s bringing people in or putting the kids in, we need to make a decision. We are always looking and especially at this stage now it might be the case to perhaps do something until the end of the season with a few of them."

An injury to defender and captain Andy Frampton could mean Hessenthaler makes a move for experienced centre-back Fortune before the weekend.

Hessenthaler said: "He has been with us a for a week and we will see. He is looking for a club and he could be an option for us until the end of the season.

"Frammo injuring himself means we have a problem and Jonathan has played a lot of games, he’s 31 and experienced. Could he be an option? At the moment we are not winning games and we are conceding too many goals. We need to put that right."

Lee, who has been told his future lies away from West Ham, could be another Hessenthaler brings in.

"We quite like him," he said. "He has had a fantastic unbringing at West Ham and could he give us something different in midfield? Maybe he could. We are going to chat with him and the chairman and see if we can do something with him until the end of the season."

Tuesday's game against Chelsea saw the Gills trail 4-1, with a goal from Callum Davies, before levelling it up with three goals in three minutes. Oliver Lee, Whelpdale and youth captain Bradley Dack all scored. But Chelsea won it through new £1.5m signing from Nottingham Forest, Patrick Bamford.
