Andy Hessenthaler gives backing to Gillingham keeper Lance Cronin

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler insists the decision to play Lance Cronin ahead of fit-again Alan Julian was an easy one to make.

Julian, who started the season as first choice keeper, got the all-clear to play again after resting a broken hand but was left on the bench as Hessenthaler stuck by his under-fire keeper Cronin.

A fault in injury time at Bradford led to the home side nicking a winner but Hessenthaler wasn’t prepared to drop him because of one error.

Hessenthaler said: "It wasn’t a tough one for me. I was always going to play Lance.

"I thought he was terrific first half; second half he had one where it nearly bounced over his head but for me the kid has had a great day and he’ll say he kept a clean sheet so fair play to him.

"I have a lot of faith in the boy and first half he made a couple of good saves. One that was nearly going over his head he stepped back and pushed it away.

"I’m delighted for Lance. He’s had some criticism but we all do in football. I’ve taken it as a player and as a manager.

"You have to learn from it and he’ll do that and move on."

Would you play Alan Julian or Lance Cronin in goal for Gills?
