Manager Andy Hessenthaler was a happy man after seeing his side pick up another league win, but admitted there were lessons to learn.
His team were cruising to the three points with 75 minutes gone, holding onto a 2-0 lead, but a Crewe goal changed the game and left the Gills hanging on at the end to keep the three points.
“Last year I think we would have ended up dropping points but it just shows how hard we are working as a team,” said the Gills boss.
“We needed to make sure we didn’t concede. We had good spells and they had good spells in the game and in the second half when our fans start singing “ole” I don’t think that helped.
“There was a little bit of complacency setting in and it looked a bit too easy.”
Once Crewe scored the Gills needed three goalline clearances and two impressive saves from keeper Ross Flitney to hold onto the points.
“It’s amazing what a goal does,” Hessenthaler said. “All of a sudden it changes the complexion of the game.
“They got the goal, which we shouldn’t have conceded. In the end we were hanging on a little bit. I am pleased. Crewe are a good team and they aren’t easy to play against. We’ve got a result but there are lessons to be learned and positives to take.”
