Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has demanded his side tighten up following their capitulation at Rotherham.

The Gills’ unbeaten start to the season ended on Saturday after they failed to recover from conceding the first goal and eventually lost 3-0.

Hessenthaler had already seen the warning signs at Crewe and Barnet and wants no repeat.

"We are disappointed because we were comfortable and I didn’t see that coming in the second half," said Hessenthaler.

"We conceded a goal and sometimes (this season) we have conceded and gone sloppy.

"Even at Crewe we conceded, let them back in it and they had a mad spell. At Barnet, we had spells where we conceded and looked uneasy.

"We lost a goal and started to chase it and maybe we need to learn from that situation and we need to be patient. There was a long time still left in the game and we needed to keep plugging away the way we were going."

Hessenthaler now hopes his players react in the right way.

"Good teams bounce back," he said. "We’ve had a tough game against Rotherham. We would have taken this at the start of the season, points wise, but we can’t have another performance like that in the second half."
