"More excuses for lazy teachers to stay in bed even though everyone else is expected and able to get to work."
That was one comment sent to KentOnline on Monday by a reader from Faversham calling himself 'Grumpy Dad'.
Dozens of schools across the county were closed due to the atrocious weather conditions, and a Kent County Council spokesman said many were left unable to open because teachers could not make their way in to work.
Grumpy Dad's view has provoked an angry reaction from Kent's teachers, who have been contacting KentOnline all day.
He certainly riled Paul from Ashford who wrote: "It's not the teachers that make the decision to close a school, it's made higher up than that. You are obviously an arrogant, stupid individual who has nothing better to do than moan about something which you know so very little about."
But Grumpy wasn't finished, and added: "It seems any excuse to close a school is sought rather than making the effort to keep it open. Not much of an example for our children are you? Your 'profession' is a public disgrace."
Robyn, a teacher from Rochester whose school was closed on Monday, argued: "[The decision to close] is made by a local member of staff who recommends whether the roads are fit for the buses to carry the students SAFELY. In the eight years I have worked there it has only been closed due to bad weather once."
Meanwhile, K Shaw from Faversham, said: "Get a life 'Grumpy Dad'. In the past I have been in school on a snowy day after it was closed due to the conditions waiting for irresponsible PARENTS to collect their children."
Replying to Grumpy Dad, a teacher from Kent argued other professions are also affected: "Many of my friends that are not teachers can't get into work. Would you prefer there to be accidents on the road so your children can have a free babysitting service?
"As for a day off, I have plenty of school work to keep me going. Been doing it all over the weekend!"
Marian, also from Kent, painted a potential scenario to try and argue her point: "Children go to school and hurt themselves (maybe when parents are taking them to school they have a crash, even worse kill someone) then would it be worth it just for one measly day!!!?"
