Anger at BBC presenter sackings

Departing BBC presenter Geoff Clark

Boy, are you angry at the sacking of BBC news presenters Geoff and Bev!

KentOnline readers have mounted a huge backlash after the BBC South East Tonight news presenters were replaced.

The double act of Geoff Clark and Beverly Thompson had built up a huge fan base over the years, but will now be replaced in October.

Avid fans of the show have condemned the sacking as ageist - as the BBC plans to bring in the younger duo of Rob Smith and Polly Evans.

Responses to a story run earlier this month include the one from ‘Sue R’, who wrote: "I am really disappointed to hear this news. Yet again the BBC seems to be replacing competent and well-loved presenters for no apparent reason except perhaps their age."

One enraged viewer says he will no longer watch the programme.

So, was the BBC right to remove the two presenters, and replace them with younger ones? Join our poll:

Tim Lyne wrote in his post: "I think it is appalling to get rid of these two. They are both excellent presenters working well together that make this programme. I for one will no longer watch this once they are gone. Who makes these decisions some little upstart with a GCSE in communications!"

Many believed the BBC had made a mistake in axing the pair.

Viewer ‘Annie B’ sums up the negative reaction in her post: "The saying goes - 'If it ain't broke - don't fix it!' Such unprofessionalism by the programme makers yet again. The rapport between the two presenters is very good and it is not always a case that new is better."

But not all were against the change: some favoured fresh faces reading the news.

‘Steve W’ wrote that he would welcome seeing the new presenters Rob and Polly: "Actually, as someone who might be considered a slightly older viewer, I prefer the vitality and "naturalness" that Rob Smith and Polly Evans can bring. You can be too smooth and after five years, surely it's time for a change. And frankly, I can't see the ITV show being too much competition for the Beeb. Welcome and good luck to Rob and Polly."
