Solos of Once in Royal David’s City will begin carol services in churches and cathedrals across the country today.

Congregations will sing carol after carol in celebration of Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ.

But many of those carols may not be quite the same as the ones some of us remember from our childhood, for, in the name of political correctness, on some carol sheets there have some some changes.

Words such as Lord, man, son, king and virgin have been replaced with what some deem more ‘suitable’ phrases.

For example in O Come All Ye Faithful, Glory to the newborn King has become Glory to the Christ child, bring and O come in adoration has replaced O come let us adore him.

In God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, the words This day is born a Saviour, of a pure Virgin bright have on some carol sheets become To you is born a Saviour, in David's town tonight.
