Armed police arrest air pistol man

A man was arrested by armed police after he was seen shooting at tin cans at a bus stop in the centre of Gillingham.

The 22-year-old, who has not been named, was arrested in Jeffery Street, at about 8pm on Thursday night after he was seen pointing an air pistol at the bus stop.

The incident happened close to the traffic lights near to the entrance of Somerfield’s underground car park where several armed officers surrounded a car and ordered the man to put down his weapon and get out.

One onlooker who didn’t want to be named said; “It was really surreal, I was driving in the opposite direction and all of a sudden the armed police swooped on the car and I had to take evasive action to avoid them.

“When he got out of the car they put him in handcuffs and took him away.”

The man has been bailed pending further inquiries until the end of September.
