Arrest made after town centre rape attack

A man has been arrested in connection with an alleged town centre rape that took place just yards from a police station.

Police say a 28-year-old woman was attacked in Maidstone shortly before midnight yesterday.

It is believed to have taken place in an alleyway which runs behind Gabriels Hill, near the R-Bar nightclub.

A 24-year-old man was arrested soon after the incident and is currently in custody at Maidstone Police Station.

Further arrests are anticipated.

This morning police had cordoned off the alleyway where it emerges at Palace Avenue, opposite Maidstone Police Station.
