Art that's straight off the street

The V&A is bringing the street inside as its collection of works by Banksy and other leading artists goes on show in the county.

Street Art: Contemporary Prints from the V&A is a collection of street art making its way to Chatham Historic Dockyard's No. 1 Smithery: The Gallery.

The exhibition shows how the genre has moved away from the painted wall to styles like printmaking, linocuts and stencils.

But even though street art can also take the shape of video projections and street installations, for many people the mention of it conjures images of a balaclava-clad youth with an aerosol at night.

Yet hundreds of thousands of pounds have been paid for works by Banksy, arguably street art's most famous name.

Of course many of the images are designed to shock as the genre often fights against social injustices. Almost all its list of themes have an anti prefix: anti-war, anti-capitalism, anti-fascism, anti-imperialism, anti-authoritarianism.

The genre also carries a defiant air as the majority of street art is unsanctioned by galleries or the government. Yet this is also what gives it its avant-garde appeal.

Both British and international street artists will have their work on show at the Dockyard.

The full list of artists taking part in the exhibition is 3-D, 9eme Concept, Alexone, Banksy, Best Ever, Blek Le Rat, Blu, Jon Burgerman, Deadbeat Donny, D*Face, Dscreet, Eine, ESM-Artificial, Evoker, Shepard Fairey, Jamie Hewlett, Horn Head, Insect, Dave Kinsey, The Krah, Meggs, Miss Tic, Graeme Nimmo, Nomad, olive47, Alex Hornest, Pinky, Projeto CHÂ, Pure Evil, Remed, Kerry Roper, Scorn, Sickboy, Jeff Soto, Sweet Toof, Swoon, Fefe Talavera and Vhils.

There will also be children's workshops during half term, giving kids the chance to design their own tag and produce it on a wall.
