Ashley Jackson has been named the International Hockey Federation’s Men’s Young Player of the Year.
The 21-year-old from King’s Hill is the first England player to receive the accolade - voted for by other pros - and beat off stiff competition from five other players named on a shortlist by the IHF.
Chatham-born Jackson, pictured, received the award after scoring twice in England’s playoff defeat to Spain at the Champions Trophy in Melbourne last week.
The former Tunbridge Wells attacking midfielder now represents Dutch side HGC after previously playing in the England Hockey League Premier Division for East Grinstead.
The former Sutton Valence School pupil received the award after scoring eight goals as England won their first ever gold medal at a major tournament after winning the EuroHockey Nations Championships in Holland this summer, at which Jackson was named Player of the Tournament.
Jackson said: "This award is not about being voted for by the people watching the game, it’s about being recognised for playing good hockey by teammates and other players."
England Head Coach Jason Lee added: "This has been a breakout year for Ashley. He’s a key ingredient in our midfield and gives us a lot of drive going forward. He’s got so much potential and will only get better."
