James Tredwell's winter is turning out much different to the way he thought it might only a few weeks ago.

The Kent off-spinner, 28 next month, was all set to coach the Academy youngsters at Canterbury, until England came calling last month.

Now it seems he has moved ahead of Yorkshire’s Adil Rashid as the second spinner behind Graeme Swann, after being the first player named for the three-match one-day series against Bangladesh which begins the day after Tredwell’s birthday.

He and Rashid have both been selected for the England Lions squad for next month’s tour to the United Arab Emirates but Tredwell will only be available for the first four matches before joining the senior party which will be announced next week.

Speaking from Johannesburg, Tredwell said: "National selector Geoff Miller is out here at the moment and he broke the news to me that I was in both squads.

"The trip to Bangladesh may give me be a better chance of getting a game there because conditions might suit playing two spinners.

"The trip has has been good and while it’s disappointing not to get a game, it’s beneficial to be able to show what I can do in the nets in front of the coaches and selection panel."

Swann has been one of England’s stars on the tour as they bid to wrap up the Test series 2-0, after winning the one-day series last month.

Tredwell said: "Graeme has given a bog standard finger spinner like me the belief that we can do well and spurred me on to follow suit."

The England squad arrive home next week, before Tredwell leaves for Dubai early next month.
