A 180 signature petition and dozens of letters have been sent in objecting to plans for a new late-night bar in Whitstable town centre.

Planning permisison has already been granted for a Bar Vasa restaurant in Albert Street.

But in the licence application, it is now being described as a bar/restaurant opening until 12.30am.

The police and and council’s own environmental health department are objecting as are nearby residents who fear they will suffer from drinkers coming and going from the premises.

Father-of-three Peter Colthup, whose home in Harbour Street backs on to the venue, and who organised the petition, said: “I have had glasses, bottles, chairs and foodstuffs thrown into my garden by drunks.

“I do not want my children woken at night having to witness acts of violence and vandalism.”

The application is due to be considered by the council’s licensing sub-committee at the Guildhall in Canterbury at 11am on Friday, January 9.
