Manager Andy Hessenthaler hailed the return of captain fantastic Barry Fuller at Morecambe.
The full-back turned 26 on Wednesday and produced a combative performance after returning from injury.
"Barry is a top professional," said Hessenthaler. "He said to me he is fitter than he has ever been and that was good news for us. He didn’t look like he had been away.
"He was outstanding for us and he is a fantastic captain. He’s a pleasure to work with and he gets better every time I see him.
"I watch him on the training ground and he goes back and does extra as well. He is an ultimate professional."
Hessenthaler is now hoping Fuller can kick-start the Gills’ wobbly home form after a nervy opener against Cheltenham and a torrid afternoon against Lincoln.
"We need the Barry Fuller’s of this world at home," said Hessenthaler.
"He is a tempo player and we need to play at a tempo at home. It’s great to have him back."
