Graeme Andrews’ second half header claimed a deserved point for Welling in Blue Square South on Saturday.
The Wings had trailed to a first half penalty but were much improved after the break and deserved their share of the spoils.
Manager Jamie Day was restricted to the substitutes bench as he named an unchanged team from the win over Hampton in midweek .
However the first 45 minuets were a distant memory from that game as the Wings lacked any cohesion.
After 20 minutes of pressure Basingstoke took the lead when Ryan Johnson’s needless challenge tripped Ryan Stephens in the box and Matt Warner sent keeper Charlie Mitten the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Despite their pressure, Basingstoke rarely tested Mitten, although it took the Wings until the 42nd minute to register a shot on goal when Loui Fazackerley’s volley went straight at keeper Craig Atkinson.
Welling lost Tony Finn to injury at half-time and whatever Day said in his team-talk seemed to do the trick.
Within five minutes they were on level terms. Michael Deane’s long free-kick was headed in by Andrews (pictured) with Atkinson stranded in no-man’s land.
Welling had a glorious chance to win the game midway through the second half when an error Lewis Christon let in Andy Pugh who fluffed his 25-yard lob with an open net to aim for.
Fazackerley was then denied at the near post and Pugh shot straight at the keeper after a neat exchange of passes as Welling continued to be in the ascendancy although they were unable to add to their tally.
The Wings are at home to Chelmsford on Tuesday night.
A goal in each half gave Bromley a 2-0 victory over St Albans in Blue Square South on Saturday.
Mark Corneille put the home side in front after 22 minutes before Gareth A Williams got the second after 76 minutes.
