Welling United remain nine points behind Blue Square Bet South leaders Woking after a 1-0 win at Basingstoke Town on Tuesday night.
Boss Jamie Day included new signing Jack Evans in his side after arriving from Gillingham on loan earlier in the week, while Jack Obersteller and Luis Cumbers both returned to the starting XI.
The visitors were ahead on just eight minutes when Obersteller was hauled down in the box and Lee Clarke (pictured) converted the penalty.
Despite the home side enjoying the lion’s share of possession, it was Welling that had the majority of the chances and they could have extended their lead before the break when Joe Healy played in Andy Pugh, but the former Gillingham striker’s effort clipped the inside of the post.
Day clipped the crossbar with a free-kick in the second-half, while towards the end Pugh rounded the goalkeeper and when presented with an open goal, he could only shoot wide.
With Woking beating Dartford 3-2 at Princes Park, Welling stayed in second place, nine points behind the Cards but having extended their lead over the Darts to six points.
Elsewhere, Bromley ended a run of seven straight defeats with a 0-0 draw at home to Dorchester Town.
