Mum Michelle Hayman and her baby son are back together with their family in Canterbury after a four-week separation.

George battled with ecoli meningitis in a London hospital last month after being diagnosed with the condition at Christmas.

Although still on daily medication, George was well enough to be discharged and the pair were home last weekend in time for Michelle’s other son’s seventh birthday on Monday.

She said: “It’s just great to be back with my partner Jarno and William so we could celebrate together and I could see him open his presents.”

Michelle, 27, of Shipman Avenue, has been at little George’s bedside in St Mary’s Hospital in London ever since he was rushed there from the William Harvey at Ashford on January 3 when doctors diagnosed the deadly bug.

She had earlier been turned away from the hospital after doctors had told her the baby’s symptoms were nothing to worry about and now the East Kent Hospitals Trust is holding a full investigation into his treatment.

She said: “George is very quiet for a baby and I have to set an alarm clock for his feeds because he doesn’t make enough noise.

“So we still have serious concerns as to how much damage he had suffered and whether his hearing and eyesight are badly affected. It doesn’t seem to be able to focus on anything and he is due to have a hearing test next week.

“But it’s a relief to be back home and together and get back to some sort of normality although I think we may have difficult times ahead with George.”
