Beach football and street dance festivals are planned for Margate.

They follow the success of the Street Football project run through St John’s Neighbourhood Action Group.

Venues earmarked are Margate main sands for the football and possibly the disused NCP car park for street dance.

Street Football is aimed at getting young people, aged 11-24, off the streets. Sessions take place at Hartsdown Leisure Centre on Saturdays, from 9am-10am.

The scheme is funded by donations and led by Beth Denning and Jason Brooke.

Jason said: “There is great potential for growth and this includes the festivals. If it all goes to plan, we shall send out to pubs all over Kent inviting them to a day of non-stop play which can hopefully become an annual event.

“Paying for existing sessions is already a challenge and for a little community project to try and do something like this is like shooting for the stars but we want to teach these kids that things can happen.”

The festivals need backers. They are supported by Margate councillor Iris Johnston who said she thought them an excellent idea.
