Controversial plans for a beach volleyball area on tennis courts in Canterbury have been approved by councillors.

There had been opposition to the scheme for Victoria recreation ground from campaigners who wanted to keep the land as public open space.

It is hoped the volleyball courts can be used in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics. The neighbouring Canterbury High School is on the list of potential training camps.
