It was 45 years ago today, that The Beatles came to Margate to play - to take a liberty with the lyrics from Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The Fab Four played a week-long, two-show-a-night stint at the town’s Winter Gardens, in July, 1963, supported by Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas.
Within months, John, Paul, George and Ringo’s careers had rocketed into the pop music stratosphere, racking up millions of sales and playing sell-out concerts at increasingly larger venues as Beatlemania spread worldwide.
But for a short while Margate played a part in their story and those memories will be evoked when a free Beatles roadshow visits the Winter Gardens’ seaside bar on Saturday.
Organised by the team that takes Beatles conventions around the UK, it will feature an amazing selection of records, CDs, books, magazines, posters and anything Beatles related from around the world, with prices ranging from 50p to more than £1,000.
Pop memorabilia experts will be on hand to buy or value unwanted Beatles items, and the roadshow’s Rob Bachelor added: “We would love to meet anyone who was actually in the audience during that historic week of shows.”
Billed as “the largest selection of Beatles items ever assembled and offered for sale in Margate,” the show runs from 10am to 3pm.
