THE latest cutting-edge 600cc sports bikes are likely to grab the limelight at the International Motorcycle and Scooter Show at Birmingham’s NEC from November 15 to 24.
Three of the biggest manufacturers - Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki - will be unveiling their all-new models in the hotly-contested middle-weight sector.
Traditionally, 600cc bikes are the biggest sellers - appealing particularly to younger riders because of the lower insurance costs. But the latest Grand Prix inspired models are likely to steal the show with their race-bike looks and performance.
Honda has decided to offer two versions of its evergreen CBR 600. While continuing with its popular all rounder, it is now offering a more focussed sports version, called the RR, which will be aimed at track riding enthusiasts.
The styling takes it cues from Honda’s GP bike with its distinctive underseat exhaust system. The revised engine makes more power and handling has been improved with a new chassis and suspension set up.
Yamaha will also be staking it claim with a significantly updated version of the R6. A sharper look, stronger engine and chassis mods will make it a keen challenger in the class.
Kawasaki’s ZX6R has become the Cinderella of the class despite it being a terrific road bike.
But the company has pulled out all the stops to ensure its 600cc sports machine is not left behind in 2003.
It has an all new look and, for the first time on a 600cc sports bike, inverted front forks.
Also at the show will be a raft of new bikes, clothing and accessories, there will be a freestyle arena for riding stunts and a chance to try out the latest scooters.
Two new exhibits this year will be The Custom Show for cruiser enthusiasts and a motorcycling touring and leisure section.
