Biker causes panic among pedestrians

A RUNAWAY motorcyclist wreaked havoc in Rochester High Street as passers-by tried desperately to push him off his bike. The panic started when the biker made off from police in Corporation Street and then turned into the town centre at high speed.

As he ignored a no-entry sign and entered a crowded pedestrian area, he narrowly avoided colliding with other vehicles.

PC Henry Sandhu said: "The High Street was busy and a number of members of the public attempted to assist the police in stopping the bike by trying to push the motorcyclist off his machine". Further sightings of the motorbike were noted in New Road, Chatham, and Churchill Avenue, Walderslade.

Officers then lost track of the bike. PC Sandhu added: "There were a number of people who witnessed this incident and I would especially like to hear from them." The chase happened late on Monday afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to telephone Medway police on 01634 884252 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
