THE Bishop of Rochester, Michael Nazir-Ali, is playing down speculation about his chances of becoming the new Archbishop of Canterbury. Despite belief that he is a strong candidate, he said: "It is very kind of people to say so but it is highly unlikely that I would be asked."

"The process has not even begun and I believe there are many people who are worthier than myself. I know if the Church asks you to do a job you have to consider it. I will be very interested in who is chosen and why."

When asked whether he would take the post if offered it, he said: "I couldn't say. I would have to consult my family and pray. Remember, it is a killing job. One reason why Dr George Carey is retiring is that he has become tired.

"It is a highly, highly demanding job involving long, hours and travel and weeks away from home. Whoever takes the post would have to operate on a worldwide stage. They couldn't take it if they can't do that."

Bishop Michael paid tribute to Dr Carey. In a statement released after the retirement was announced, he said: "The Archbishop of Canterbury has worked to encourage greater confidence in the Church of England. In his worldwide role his appreciation of the importance of Islam must be, in the light of recent events, seen as prophetic."

He said Dr Carey's establishment of dialogue with different traditions in Islam was "nothing short of pioneering" and that he was highly respected in the Anglican Communion.
