Firefighters were called to a derelict theatre in Chatham after a fire was started amongst the rubble.
One pump from Medway and one pump from Strood were called to the Theatre Royal in Chatham High Street at 3.15pm on Wednesday.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze.
It took them half an hour to put the fire out.
A spokesman for Medway fire station said: "It had the potential to be a huge fire. The site is also very dangerous as many of the walls are unstable and there is lots of rubbish and rubble piled high inside.
"We contacted Medway Council when we got back to the station and asked them to make contact with the contractors to ensure the building is boarded up properly."
A council spokesman said:"Medway Council was called by KFRS to the Theatre Royal at 4.15pm and someone was on site about 15 minutes later to board it up again. "
