Dozens of firefighters tackled a blaze that ripped through a Kent garden centre.

More than 70 firefighters went to the scene at Ruxley Manor Garden Centre in Sidcup after a fire broke out in the centre’s warehouse and grotto on Sunday afternoon.

It was under control by the evening, but firefighters remained on site throughout the night and were still there on Monday.

The centre –a family-run business- first opened in 1964.

James Evans, who works at the centre, said the fire had caused a “significant” amount of damage.

He added: “All stock that we had on site is now lost, but thankfully the retail area just about remained unscathed.”

Despite the damage caused, it remains open for business: "We are open as normal, we opened at 9am Monday,” Mr Evans said.
